Abuela’s – The Mexican restaurant Anna Maria Lopez owned and ran in Passions in Death. It was five blocks from the Down and Dirty Club, next to a townhouse where Ms. Lopez lived with her husband, Juan Lopez, near another set of townhomes housing more Lopezes. Her granddaughter, ChiChi Lopez, lived in one that shared a wall with hers. The restaurant had sidewalk service under a red-and-white striped awning. Roarke called it a very well-run restaurant, and it (and all the townhouses and some other properties were owned by Lopez Family LLC.[1] It started as a food truck, then two food trucks. Anna Maria Delgato married Juan Lopez, and they had four kids while helping run the food trucks -- now numbering three. Their four kids had kids, and about five years before ChiChi was born (34 years ago -- ~2027), they opened Abuela’s. Six years later, they bought the building.[2]

When Eve arrested ChiChi for assault, drunk and disorderly, and disturbing the peace after she hit Shauna Hunnicut at Erin Albright’s memorial service, Commander Whitney received a call from the mayor, who was a frequent patron of Abuela’s. ChiChi’s mother was the one who contacted the mayor, who wanted to keep a low profile on his involvement due to ChiChi’s career as a stripper. The mayor’s office requested some leeway on the matter, due to the emotional state of all parties involved. Apparently the enchiladas are exceptional, and one of Ms. Lopez’s cousins worked in the mayor’s office.[3]

Not to be confused with Abuelo’s, the restaurant founded by Hector Ortiz and located in Spanish Harlem, a few blocks from St. Cristóbal’s, in Salvation in Death.[4]
