Abuelo’s – Mentioned in Salvation in Death, it was a family-owned Mexican restaurant founded by Hector Ortiz and located in Spanish Harlem, a few blocks from St. Cristóbal’s. Ortiz opened it when he was twenty-five and ran it with his wife until about ten years ago when one of his sons and his granddaughter took over.[1] It was named for his grandfather.[2]
There are at least three floors with an apartment above the restaurant.[3]
Teresa Franco worked there prior to Lino’s birth and then returned to work for Ortiz for another six years after her son turned fifteen;[4] Lino worked for Hector when he was fifteen, and stole from him.[5]
Not to be confused with Abuela’s, the restaurant owned and run by ChiChi Lopez’s grandmother, Anna Maria Lopez, and their family in Passions in Death.[6]
