Another Chance – Owned and operated by Darlie Tanaka in Payback in Death, it was a nonprofit that assisted the displaced and disenfranchised in finding housing and employment, while providing clothing, food, legal aid, and education opportunities.[1] Tanaka ran her organization out of an old, post-Urbans warehouse with decent security. The front room was a mash-up between a casual living room and friendly medical waiting area, with tables, chairs, a small sofa - all on the shabby side - a kids’ play area with cubbies holding various toys. A long, scarred table served as a reception desk, currently manned by a male too young to buy a legal brew. His orange hair flopped down over one eye as he pecked carefully at the keyboard of an ancient comp, and with the focus of someone defusing a bomb. He recognized Eve and Peabody for cops and after alerting Tanaka sent them back to her office.
Tanaka's makeshift office had a desk that might have come over on the ark - it was actually Martin Greenleaf’s father’s desk, given to him when he got out of the Academy. Notices, flyers, uplifting sayings, and old posters of rockers (Avenue A featured) plastered the walls. Greenleaf used to come in now and then and do some little repairs.
A college friend of Tanaka’s, Pru, and her wealthy husband, Sam, helped her purchase the building. Another friend and member of the book club Beth Greenleaf was with the night her husband was murdered, Cassidy Bryer, volunteered there, using their small day care for her two kids while she worked; she assisted some of the Chancers with honing their interview skills, since one of the purposes was to help people find work, and stick.
They often worked with Dóchas and Open Doors, and Tanaka was familiar with Sebastian, although when Eve asked her if she worked with him, she took the Fifth.
Elva Arnez frequently donated good clothing the Chancers could use at interviews and work, and she hired one of the women as a clerk at Très Belle about six months ago. Tawny was still there, and doing very well.[2]
