Glory in Death[]

  • Note: The audio matched the text in the Cristine McMurdo-Wallis version in all cases.

    • Audio: “I’m starving, but I’ve got to see the place first. Show me everything.”[4]
  • Text: “It’s a good piece, Nadine.”[5]
    • Audio: “That’s a good piece, Nadine.”[6]
  • Text: “She steps out into the rain, and into a knife.”[7]
    • Audio: “She steps out into the rain, and into the knife.”[8]
  • Text: “I think it’s going to be crystal. Mr. Angelini, where were you between the hours ...”[9]
    • Audio: “I think it’s going to be crystal, Mr. Angelini. Now where were you between the hours ...”[10]

Reunion in Death[]

  • Text: “We need the room. Room 911. I take it you understand?”
    • Audio: “We need the room.” He flicked cold blue eyes over the man’s nameplate. Some you intimate. “Milton, room 911. I take it you understand?”[11]

Visions in Death[]

  • Text: “What he’d done to Elisa had been well planned...” (Chapter 7).
    • Audio: “What he’d done to Celina had been well planned...”

Survivor in Death[]

  • In the audio version, Grant and Keelie lived at 1322 West 79st Street rather than 310 West 81st Street and Grant married Getz, Jenny Rose rather than Getz, Keelie Rose. Jenny Swisher was three years younger, whereas in the text version, Keelie Swisher was two years younger. For Coyle, “no flag on the medical” rather than “no flags on the medical.” Eve was pondering over it rather than pondering it.[12]
    • In the audio version, when Peabody explained to Eve about allowances, she added a word, saying, “Being a Free-Ager, we did bartering more than pay, but it comes to the same thing.” In the audio, “Eve continued” rather than “she continued.” The audio version omitted the word can from: “We can run the adults’ business associates and clients.”[12]
    • In the audio version, when Peabody asked about discounting urban terrorism, Eve replied, “Roarke had the right idea on that one” rather than “Roarke had it right on that one.” She said, “You want to terrorize, you’re messy. Kill a family, rape and torture first, wreck the house, slice up their little dog.” The text version was: “You want to terrorize, you’re messy. Kill the family, rape and torture first, wreck the house, slice up their little dog.” As they got ready to leave for the morgue, then Central, Peabody asked Eve if she wanted her to let Summerset know they were leaving. “'Why? Oh hell. Yeah, do that.' Pressing her fingers to her eyes, she crossed to the door joining her office with Roarke’s.” The bolded text was not in the print version.[12]
    • In the audio version, Morris told Eve and Peabody the last meals for the Swishers, Linnie, and Inga, ending with: “The adults had a glass of wine, the children soy milk.” In the text, the adults had white wine. “[Morris] turned to another screen, called for pictures, split screen on Grant and Jenny Swisher. Magnified the wounds.” In the text, it’s, of course, Keelie, not Jenny. Morris said, “There’s slight deviations,” but in the text he says, “There’re slight deviations.” After he gave Eve more information on the weapon, the audio had Eve's reply: “'Military style,' she murmured. Not that you have to be military to obtain.” The text read: “'Military style,' she stated. Not that you have to be military to obtain one.”
    • Eve asked Morris if the Dysons had seen Linnie yet. He replied, “'Yes. An hour ago. It was... hideous. Look at her,' he murmured.” In the text he “urged.” In the audio version, “She slid her hands into her back pockets, studying the young dead. 'You don't have any kids, right?'” The text reads: “'You don’t have any kids, right?' Eve asked.” Morris replied, “No, no chick nor child. There was a woman once, and we were together long enough to consider it. But that was... ago.” The text added the word long, as in “But that was... long ago.” In audio, “She flicked her eyes back to his face, slickly framed...” In the text, it read: “She studied his face, slickly framed...”[12]
    • Back in Central, Baxter told Eve about the case he and Trueheart caught that morning, a “double D that went nasty”: “They got into it when he crawled home, smacked each other around -- as per usual according to the neighbors and various reports.” In the text, it reads “previous reports.”[12]
    • Audio: “Eve set up her office case board.” Text: “She set up her office case board.”[12]
    • Audio: “She scooted up again. 'Computer. Probability run, multiple homicides, case file H-226989-SD.'” Text: “'Computer. Probability run, multiple homicides, case file H-226989-SD,' Eve ordered.”[12]
    • Audio: “Working... Speculative inquiry with insufficient data to project.” Text: “Working... Wholly speculative inquiry with insufficient data to project.”[12]
    • Audio: “As our only witness, I felt it best to keep her close.” Text: “As she’s our only witness, I felt it best to keep her close.”[12]
    • Audio: “The longer the better, in Eve’s opinion.” Text: “The longer the better, Eve thought.”[12]
    • In the audio version, Eve tells Jenny Dyson, “Mrs. Dixon, we’re going to need to talk about arrangements for Nixie.”[13]
    • In the audio version, there was extra text after Eve said, “Nadine, do you know why I often give you an inside track?”[14]
      • The audio version has Eve adding, “Excluding, of course, my hopeless obsession with your gorgeous tits.” Nadine then replied, “Excluding the girls? Why don’t you tell me?”
      • It then resumed with “Because it’s not just the story with you,” matching the text, until the last sentence, which added the bolded text to the audio: “And you wouldn’t, not even for ratings, sacrifice those people to get your pretty face and attractive tits on air.”
    • The audio version had an extra line from Peabody:
Eve: “If I went for girls, I’d jump you right now.”
“There was a tremble along the jaw that rippled into a reluctant smile.”
Peabody: “I’ve always wanted you in my secret heart”
“And just like that, the crisis passed.”[15]
    • The audio version omitted an entire section of Roarke recalling his childhood, beginning with “He had an abrupt and crystal-clear image of himself...” through “Nixie had never been booted down the stairs by a drunken bastard who’d happened to share her blood.”[16]
      • The section missing from the audiobook was:
“--filthy shirt, bloody nose, hard and defiant eyes--standing at the top of the steps in the stinking dump where he’d once lived in Dublin. And there was his father -- big, strapping Patrick Roarke -- weaving a bit from too much drink.
You think you can pass off a couple of thin wallets as a day’s take? I’ll have the rest of it, you buggering little bastard.
He remembered the boot coming up -- he remembered that still -- and his quick dodge. Not quick enough, though, not that time. He felt now as he’d felt then, the stomach-dropping sensation of falling, of knowing it would be bad. Had he cried out? Odd that he couldn’t remember. Had he yelled in shock, cursed in fury, or just gone down those steps in a bone-banging roll?
What he could remember, and wasn’t that a bitch, was the sound of his father laughing as the boy he’d been tumbled down the stairs. What was his age then? Five? Six? No matter.
And, well, hell, he had been holding back, hadn’t he? And considered the cuts and bruises worth the ten pounds he’d stashed away.”
    • The audio version omitted a section of Roarke speaking with Nixie, beginning with him telling Nixie, “Someone took my mother from me before I was old enough to know her.” through wondering, “Was it born in her or had it been instilled by her parents?”[16]
      • The section missing from the audiobook is:
        Nixie: “Is she in heaven?”
        Roarke: “I’m sure she is.”
        Nixie: “That’s not fair, either.”
“She laid her head on his chest again, patted him with her hand in a gesture of comfort that moved him, amazingly. She could offer him comfort, Roarke thought. Even now she had the heart in her to give solace. How did she come by that?”
  • Text: “Tag Baxter, tell him to prioritize the Brenegan case. And contact the commander ....”[17]
    • Audio: An additional scene was included: “Tag Baxter, tell him to prioritize the Brenegan case.”
      • The audio version had:
“She used the dash ’link. Roarke’s admin, Caro, came on.
Caro: ‘Lieutenant, what can I do for you?’
        Eve: ‘Is he tied up?’
Peabody: ‘Mmmm,’ Peabody murmured around another eggroll. ‘What an image.’
Eve's arm snapped out and the back of her hand connected sharply with Peabody’s belly.
        Peabody: ‘Ow.’
Caro: ‘He’s just finished a meeting.’ The quick light of humor in Caro’s eyes told Eve she’d heard Peabody’s aside.
Caro: ‘Let me put you through.’
Eve: ‘I believe my orders at the briefing were to stay alert,’ Eve reminded her partner. ‘You’re not really staying alert if you’re indulging in bondage fantasies about Roarke.’
Peabody: ‘That doesn’t really take any effort. I can check for a tail, contact Baxter, and fantasize simultaneously.’
Roarke’s face slid onto the screen and Peabody gave a long, quiet sigh.
        Peabody: ‘How can you not?’
        Roarke: ‘Lieutenant.’
Eve: ‘Listen, you got any sort of ETA on when you’ll be back at the house?’
Roarke: ‘Ninety minutes, more or less.’
Eve: ‘I've got a job here maybe you could squeeze into your schedule.’
        Roarke: ‘Police business?’
Eve: ‘Yeah. Tracing electronic communiques and financial transfers. Feeney’s in the field. We’ve got some movement and I want to keep rolling on it. I can get the data to you.’
Roarke: ‘And I can squeeze you in. Now let’s discuss my fee and per diem.’ He smiled as he shifted his gaze to Peabody.
        Roarke: ‘Peabody, pretend you’re deaf.’
Peabody: ‘What? Did you say something?’
Eve: ‘You guys are a riot,’ Eve muttered. ‘We’ll discuss your payoff later, pal. Ninety minutes.’ She clicked off.
Eve: ‘Should be about enough. Peabody, contact the commander, see if he’s had any luck cutting through the red tape.’”[18]
    • In the audio version there was a whole section missing in Chapter 16. It skipped from Eve telling Mira, “I know some people who’d qualify to take her [Nixie] on.” to “I need to talk to Roarke because he knows them better.”[19]
      • Missing was the whole mention of Richard DeBlass and Elizabeth Barrister and the murder of their daughter and closing of the case in Naked in Death:
Eve: ‘I was thinking maybe we could contact Richard DeBlass and Elizabeth Barrister.’
        Mira: ‘It’s a good thought.’
Eve: ‘They took that kid, the boy, we found on a murder scene last year.’ Eve shifted, not entirely comfortable with the role of family planner.
Eve: ‘I figure they decided to foster him because their daughter was murdered. Though she was an adult, and--’
Mira: ‘Your child is always your child. Age doesn’t factor.'
Eve: ‘If you say so. Anyway, I guess they wanted another chance to... whatever. I know Roarke waded in with that kid, ah, Kevin. Gave them a little nudge to take him in. From what I know, it worked out okay, and like I said, they’re qualified. Maybe they’d consider taking in another.’
Mira: ‘I think it’s a very good idea. You’ll talk to them.’
Boggy area, Eve thought. Eve: ‘Ah... I need to talk to Roarke because he knows them better.’

Origin in Death[]

  • Audio Difference:
    • In Chapter 1, Peabody asked Eve, “When’s Roarke due home?” but in the audio version, it was “When Roarke’s due home.”

Born in Death[]

  • Audio Difference:
    • Text: “Whitney made a direct statement.” Audio: “Feeney made a direct statement.” This was when Eve was talking to Feeney about Whitney’s comments about Roarke having access to the data from Sloan, Myers, and Kraus in Chapter 7.

Fantasy in Death[]

  • In the audio version, Derby was read as Darby.[20]

Treachery in Death[]

  • In Chapter 5, when Peabody gave her report to Whitney, she started, “Commander, at approximately two hundred hours...” but in the book and in the story, it was twenty hundred hours.

Devoted in Death[]

  • Number of Kills:
    • Zweck charged James with twenty-nine murders in the text version, but in the audio version, he charged him with twenty-four murders (Chapter 23).

Brotherhood in Death[]

  • Audio Error: Eve to Dennis Mira: “You know Patrick Betz.” It should be Frederick Betz.[21]

Dark in Death[]

    • In the book, Piper DeLano’s sweatshirt proclaimed: GIRLS R+ RULE, which made no sense, but in the audio version, it was GIRLS ROCK + RULE[22]
    • In the audio version, Susan Ericksen called Piper “Pepper” once[22]
  • Eve’s conversation with Santiago:
    • In the audio version, Susan Ericksen read out Eve’s line as “‘Roarke owns the Celtics,’ she created” instead of “‘Roarke owns the Celtics,’ she corrected[23]

Leverage in Death[]

  • Loren Able was wearing an “I F059 NEW YORK” sweatshirt at the hospital, but in the audio version, it was “I HEART NEW YORK,” which made considerably more sense.[24]

Vendetta in Death[]

  • In the audio version, Eve told Roarke, “I’ve got to travel to check,” but it should be “I’ve got travel to check” (and is in the book) (Chapter 7)
  • In the audio version, Jacie Pepperdine said, “I’m not stupid enough to get drink at the most important meeting of my life.” - it should be drunk, as in the print version (Chapter 17)

Golden in Death[]

  • Audio Errors:
    • In the book, Eve said, “Lots of gold to mine,” but it was read in Roarke’s voice by Susan Ericksen.[25]
    • When Eve and Roarke left Cobbe’s interview, Susan Ericksen said, “‘I’ll come for you!’ Roarke shouted.” It should be Cobbe shouted.[26]

Random in Death[]

Audio Error: In Chapter 11, Susan Ericksen read Eve’s paragraph in Peabody’s voice: “My pride nearly exceeds the magnificence of this babka. The minute he noticed the sad baggies, the one wearing them sank beneath notice.”
