She was on vacation with her family, and as they were on the Staten Island Ferry, her son, Pete, was thirsty and had to use the bathroom.^[1]
When she walked into the women’s room, even though it had an “Out of Order” sign on it, she saw a woman on the floor, bathed in blood, with Ivan Draski standing over her holding a bloody knife and a stunner. He apologized and then stunned her with Buckley's stunner on the lowest setting.
When she came around he used the Lost Time device on her, which incapacitated her through an optical signal rather than through the nervous system.
She was susceptible to suggestions, so Ivan had her hide until her watch alarm went off and then return to the bathroom, not remembering that hour or all the blood, to give him time to leave the ferry with Buckley’s body.^[1]
As an unscheduled fireworks display began, Carolee appeared, dazed and with a purpling knot on her forehead, and no memory of what happened or even that she was unconscious.^[2]
When Eve re-interviewed Carolee in the hospital, she still didn’t remember what happened; upon seeing a picture of Buckley, she didn’t recognize her but her pulse rate sped up.^[3]
Roarke upgraded the family to The Roarke Palace Hotel while Eve was checking with the doctor, who told her there was something wonky in Carolee’s memory section, an optic smudge, but the tox was clean, and the blip was resolved on retest.^[3]

This was the first time her family had been east of the Mississippi, and going to New York was a long-cherished dream of hers.^[1]
