Code Five – An NYPSD term that meant a case was being kept quiet; it was used with the Sharon DeBlass murder in Naked in Death. Only key personnel were to know about the investigation. “Code Five meant she would report directly to her commander, and there would be no unsealed interdepartmental reports and no cooperation with the press. In essence, it meant she was on her own.”[1] With Code Five, Eve had to do the door-to-door (questioning possible witnesses) herself.[2] Also called Level Five in Witness in Death.[3]
In Conspiracy in Death, Whitney determined that “East Washington is much too interested in our business,” so he told Eve to put together a team and “keep it Code Five from this point,” “blocking any unsealed interdepartmental reports and adding a media block.”[4]
In Purity in Death, Eve used her judgment to classify Nick Greene’s blackmail enterprise as a “Code Five,” meaning “complete media block and all departmental records would be sealed during the investigation.” She reported only to Whitney and Chief Tibble.[5]
Other codes include Code four, Code Blue, Code Red, and Code Yellow.
