Eatery – Cafeteria at Cop Central that appeared and was mentioned in several books in the series. The best that could be said about the slop served at Cop Central’s Eatery was that it filled the hole serious hunger could dig.[1] It was always crowded, always noisy. It reminded Eve of a public school cafeteria, except the food was even worse and most of the people eating were armed. There were booths, tiny four-tops, and counter service with stingy stools, with comp menus bolted to the side of booths.[2]

  • Feeney was eating “what passed for breakfast” there while he debriefed Eve in Naked in Death; it was irradiated eggs, washed down with black bean coffee.[3] Also in Naked in Death Eve mentioned having a quick dinner there after she filed the Finestein report.[4] Later in the book, Feeney was on his way back to the office from the eatery, a half a soy burger in his hand.[5]
  • In Glory in Death, Eve settled for a soy muffin and what passed for coffee.[6] At Roarke’s cocktail party later in the book, she commented that the food was a long leg up from the eatery.[7]
  • In Rapture in Death, while Eve and Roarke were dining on lobster in melted (real) butter during their honeymoon, she asked him: “How am I going to face the cardboard they pass off as food at the eatery once I’m back on the job?” (Roarke pointed out that she ate candy bars on the job.)[10] Later in the story, she told Feeney she would pick up the tab the next time they were in the Eatery if he sent her info on Senator Pearly’s apparent suicide.[11]
  • In Ceremony in Death, Eve thought Frank Wojinski was a good cop, affable, and hadn’t complained about the bilge disguised as food at the NYPSD Eatery.[12] Later in the book, Carter teased Eve by asking her why she didn’t get her rich husband to buy the eatery and stock it with real food.[13]
  • In Conspiracy in Death, Peabody accessed data on her palm PC between bites of what was supposed to be a spinach omelette, while Eve hacked at the cardboard disguised as a pancake, finally giving up when even the small lake of syrup drowning the pancake didn’t soften it, and switched to gut-burning coffee.[1]
  • In Origin in Death, Eve offered to buy Feeney what passed for lunch at Central eatery. They squeezed into a booth and both ordered fake pastrami on marginally fresh rye. Eve disguised hers by drowning it in mustard the unfortunate color of infected urine. Feeney slopped a soy fry through a puddle of anemic ketchup and tried the stringy substance masquerading as pastrami. He washed down the sandwich with truly horrible fake coffee. He wondered how bad the pie could be and ordered a slice. He frowned at the plate that slid out of the order slot. On it was a mushy triangle on the brown side of orange. Eve asked, “Is that supposed to be pumpkin pie? It looks more like a slice of--” “don’t say it. I’m eating it,” says Feeney.[15]
  • In Creation in Death, Roarke asked Eve if she was aware that the Eatery “serves nothing that could possibly be considered remotely palatable,” although Eve told him the eggs weren’t that bad if you put a lot of salt on them. He elected instead to bring her oatmeal from the deli around the corner.[16]
  • In Desperation in Death, Eve took one look at the mountain of fluffy scrambled eggs and knew Roarke hadn’t ordered from Central’s Eatery.[20]
