Solid upper-middle-class upbringing, native New Yorker (Brooklyn), parents still married to each other, first and only for them. Her brother was a golf pro in South Carolina, where their parents wintered.
She majored in sociology, did social work, and moved to Manhattan (Lower West Side).
In her mid-twenties she was engaged to a law student who was about to take the bar. Before he could, he was killed, stabbed multiple times in a robbery at a liquor store where he’d stopped to buy a bottle of wine to take to her parents’ for dinner. Detective Noy was primary and apprehended her fiancé’s killer, who was still inside. He was eighteen at the time and put multiple holes in another human being, and a couple in the clerk, who survived.
Three years later, she and Noy married and she became a professional parent on the birth of their son, and remained so until Noy’s death. She focused on motherhood and volunteer work - homeless shelters, child advocacy, fund-raising for the school her children attended once they did. She increased her volunteer work when both children hit school age. After Noy’s death she had to go back to work since they’d lost their home and savings.
She met Cal at a fund-raiser she worked (he was a donor), and now was back to volunteer work.
She’d been married to Cal for nearly a year and it was the second marriage for both of them.^[2]
