Higher Power Cleansing Center for Youths – Located in the East Village, it was a school featured in Concealed in Death. The students ranged from ages 10-18, with some enrolled as day residents and some as full-time (live-in), and was run by a sister and brother pair named Philadelphia Jones and Nashville Jones.
The children were enrolled by their guardians or by the court system, with many troubled and/or addicted to a variety of substances, most with poor self-control, self-image, and a plethora of bad habits. The school provided them with structure, boundaries, group and individual therapy, and spiritual guidance. The former location, called The Sanctuary, was little more than a holding pattern for most of the children - a place to come in out of the cold, with many of the students runaways or abandoned.
It was a safe place, a warm bed, healthy food, and guidance, but they were hampered by lack of funding until their benefactor, Tiffany Brigham Bittmore, stepped in to donate the building for the Higher Power Cleansing Center for Youths and a financial trust to help with the considerable expenses fifteen years ago. Oliver Hill was their Office Manager, Matron Brenda Shivitz was mentioned as a staff member[1], along with former Matron Orwin.[2] Bittmore’s granddaughter, Seraphim Brigham, was formerly a youth resident at The Sanctuary and now worked at HPCCY as a respected therapist with a solid reputation.[3]
