Interesting Facts[]
- He took Mary Kate Covino under his wing when she came on board and he headed most of the projects she worked on.
- He and M.K. often took the subway together and lived a couple of blocks from Lauren Elder’s apartment.
- He paid for his mother’s twelve or sixteen year (YANNI) stay at Suskind Home on Long Island at a price tag of over five and a half million dollars; she had advanced dementia, including paranoia and violent outbursts, and died in February, 2061, at age 106 from heart failure.
- He moved to New York at age 18, in 2004. He had sketchy employment and residence until 2008, when he enrolled in community college, then night school, part-time work at a pizza joint. He got a degree in marketing with a minor in sociology, which took him five years. He landed an entry-level at Adverts Unlimited, spent five years there, then seven years at Young and Bester Marketing, climbing up to junior exec before shifting to Digby, where he met and worked with Linny Dowell, and kept climbing to department head, with a couple of gaps, until he left to join Dowell’s start-up.
- His gaps were April through August, 2031, probably when his father got sick and he went back to help care for him, and 2038 when his father died. Rigby hired him back both times but with a salary cut. Dowell started up in 2046.
- He had been to Arnold’s a few times, but found it “a little stiff” and didn’t recognize Lauren Elder except from the news, which was so upsetting he turned it off. He had been to Mike’s Place a lot and recognized Anna Hobe from there since she had a good voice.[2]
- He grew up as a PK (Preacher’s Kid) in rural Kentucky, so he was closeted and when he finally told his parents he was gay, they were shocked, hurt, and couldn’t accept or support him. His father said harsh things, and he left home with that shame and pain inside him. He had a little money from his maternal grandparents, who were able to accept and support him, and he moved to New York angry, desperate, and determined never to return home. He met a wealthy man with many contacts who ran an escort service in the days before legalized prostitution. He learned his grandfather died a week after the funeral and left him money with a request that he use it to better himself, so he enrolled in college. He went home to bring his diploma to his grandfather’s grave to show him and his mother found him there and wept and asked for his forgiveness. He reconciled with his father as well, and when he got sick he went home to help. His grandmother left him everything and he used the money to make a home in New York for he and his mother.[2]
YANNI[]
- His mother spent either “the last sixteen years at the Suskind Home” or “a dozen years.” In Chapter 12, it was stated that he shelled out over five and a half million dollars in the last sixteen years of her life for her care and housing.
