Jazz (Illegal drug) mentioned in several In Death books. In Purity in Death, Louis K. Cogburn was a small-time illegals dealer who primarily hawked Zoner and Jazz; he cut the Zoner with dried grass scored from city parks, and the Jazz with baking powder he bought in warehouse-sized bins. His target clientele were middle-class kids between the ages of ten and twelve in the three school districts closest to his Lower East Side apartment.[1] Officer Proctor called him a “small-time Illegals rat, went after schoolkids. Gave them samples of Zoner and Jazz to lure them in,” but admitted he’d never shown violent tendencies before killing Ralph Wooster and injuring Suzanne Cohen.[2] He sold Devin Dukes some Jazz, putting him on the kill list for the Purity Seekers, although Eve thought Dwier messed up the investigation, allowing Cogburn to skate.[3] Hannah Wade, who was staying with Nick Greene, had a sweet attack from the Jazz she ingested, which is why she was in the kitchen eating ice cream when Greene attacked and killed her and then himself.[4]

Ron Steiner said he and Tubbs bought a little Exotica, some Push, and Jazz in Memory in Death, but all he (Steiner) did was a few tokes of Jazz.[5] In Salvation in Death, Detective Stuben told Eve he caught Lino Martinez with a pocketful of Jazz when he was ten, but he let him off because he liked his mother, Teresa Franco, and knew how hard she worked and tried with him.[6] In Chaos in Death, Marti Frank told Eve her brother was a junkie, favoring Jazz laced with Zeus, and died from an OD of it.[7]

This should not be confused with Jazz, Dingo’s friend in Portrait in Death.[8]
