Lord Investigations – Former Detective Eli Lord’s place of business in Payback in Death. It was on the third floor of an Alphabet City office building, sharing space with Lori’s School of Dance, Thompson Accounting, Creative Nail Artists, Murals by Tess, and John Calhoun, Attorney at Law, the latter two not rating an exterior sign. His daughter, former Officer Marcia Lord, was a wrong cop, disciplined twice for excessive force before breaking a child’s arm - the kid was pinched shoplifting. Instead of calling for medical aid, she cuffed the eleven-year-old. It was caught by a bystander’s cam, the kid screaming in pain, and her threatening to break his other arm if he didn’t shut up. She took his service weapon and self-terminated. He got in Captain Martin Greenleaf’s face, Whitney’s face, and then turned in his papers and got a PI license.

The office had a frosted-glass door bearing his name and a small reception area with two chairs, a compact coffee station, and a single desk. It was a small office, clean and organized, with a single plant with shiny green leaves spearing up from a pot under a light. The receptionist, an attractive brunette, around thirty, had worked for him for almost five years and loved it. Lord handled all sorts of investigations: domestic, insurance, background checks, even missing persons, and sometimes did some work for the lawyer next door, John Calhoun. According to the receptionist, he was very good at what he did and got a lot of client referrals.[1]
