Manhattan East Hotel – The hotel Reginald and Willow Mackie used for their sniper nest to kill Ellissa Wyman, Dr. Brent Michaelson, and Alan Markum at the Wollman Rink in Central Park in Apprentice in Death. It was on Second Avenue, in the Sutton Place neighborhood (between between 53rd and 59th Street), and had been owned by the same family for five generations: “old, but well kept, low- to mid-range.” It was billed as “family friendly” and some of the rooms have kitchenettes. The lobby was quiet and small, with a skinny cafe and a closet-sized gift shop.
The hotel had old-fashioned touches, like an elevator where you had to push a button for the floor, windows that opened partially (but they did have privacy screens), and light switches rather than voice controls. There were no security cams but a very observant front desk clerk, Henry Whipple, was able to give Eve a thorough description of the Mackies and their luggage, including the Tactical-XT case. They rented 1004, requesting it specifically, and declined assistance with their luggage from the bellhop, Gino. Although the room was thoroughly cleaned by Tasha, she remembered seeing chair and bipod indentations by the window.[1]
They offered garage parking for guests, but the Mackies didn’t check a vehicle there.[2]
- YANNI: Eve called it the East Side hotel and then the East Side Hotel.[2]
