• Needy and just wanted to fit in; she would have done anything for Shelby’s approval.
• Shelby forged paperwork returning her to her parental custody even though no missing persons report had been filed.
• Her mother had a substance abuse problem that resulted in neglect, unemployment, and eventually eviction for nonpayment of rent. They ended up on the street where the mother did some unlicensed prostitution for food, shelter, and more often illegals. Her mother got bashed up a few times and she got busted for stealing. CPS stepped in and Mikki ended up in The Sanctuary with her mother doing a short stint and obligatory rehab. Her mother skipped out on rehab the first round but got busted again, got the shit beaten out of her in jail, and had a personal epiphany. She stuck with the full 90 days and follow-up meetings, getting a job cleaning offices at night and working days in a sweatshop off the books. She petitioned to get Mikki back, but Mikki wouldn’t go to school or pull her weight, stealing from her and doing drugs. The mother found out she was pregnant, was scared of Mikki, who had a knife, and they fought, with Mikki pushing her pregnant mother down the stairs. Her mother opted to not file a missing persons report the last time Mikki ran away, cutting her losses, and now had two other children: a boy about Mikki’s age and a girl two years younger.
