Furst, Nadine

First Appearance: Naked in Death

Channel 75 news reporter, on the crime beat. She is the intended victim of the murders in Glory in Death, but Eve is the one who stops the murders. Nadine is an extremely ambitious reporter, but an ethical one; she will always protect her source (in these books, the source is Eve) and follows her cases thoroughly. Eve sums up Nadine’s core in this way: “Nadine likes to get her teeth in red meat as much as any reporter. She’s just better at seeing the real story — not just the jazz that pulls ratings. That’s why, I think, she pulls them. She digs for the truth, not just the juice.”[1]

The transactions between Nadine and Eve are usually the same: when Eve is in the early stages of investigating a case, Nadine will call her repeatedly, asking for information. Eve usually responds (or calls back) on the third or fourth call and gives Nadine a few key pieces of information. From there, Eve expects Nadine to do some more digging (which she does more quickly and effectively than the police), return the facts to Eve, and ultimately be rewarded with an exclusive interview when the case breaks.

When Eve’s badge is taken away from her in Conspiracy in Death, Nadine rallies to the cause with a bombardment of news clips and stories, playing on the news, about the heroic cop’s badge unjustly taken away.

She and Eve are good friends, and the only reporter Eve truly trusts to properly deliver select media information. In fact, Nadine was at Eve’s bachelorette party.

Nadine acquires her own show in Memory in Death as a direct result of the story Eve fed her in Origin in Death, which being a case about human cloning, garnered Nadine immense publicity worldwide. Eve makes an appearance on the show (with Roarke watching from off-camera) in Innocent in Death, interviewing with Nadine about the Icove case. Peabody has also appeared on Now.

In Apprentice in Death, Nadine meets rock star Jake Kincade, and they become a couple.

As of Apprentice in Death, Nadine has moved into her penthouse (A). The building was sharp and sleek and silver. Not shiny and bright, but aged in a way to lend it character and dignity. There was a lavish front entrance, where Eve parked when she visited Nadine. The ground level soared toward vaulted ceilings where wines twined around white beams. Light sparkled on white marble floors from huge chandeliers fashioned from twists of that aged silver and balls of rich blue glass. Amenities include a bank, three boutiques, restaurants, a bakery and a gourmet food mart, and a business center. Nadine’s penthouse can be accessed from any car in elevator bank C, which is just past a translucent wall of falling water that falls musically into a narrow pool banked with lush red flowers.[2]

Nadine’s apartment was described as having a wide foyer flanked by matching pedestal tables holding blue orchids. Her living room had glossy floors the color of the roasted chestnuts that scented the street. A wall of windows opened the living space to a wide terrace, and a spectacular view of the city. The dining area had a long, slick black table centered with a big glass basket in orchid blue and surrounded by black chairs with blue seat cushions, and her silver-and-white kitchen had a breakfast nook in a window alcove and a massive center island. Eve called her place “swank digs.”[2] In Echoes in Death, Peabody said that Nadine purchased a pretty Terrezio lamp for $8500 for her new apartment (early February, 2061).[3]

Her previous apartment, on the ninth floor, was described as dated, with bad security and the water took too long to go from tepid to warm.[4]

Descriptions[]

  • Eve often observes throughout the series that Nadine wears high heels, which Nadine says she wears to make her legs look good.
  • Eyes:
    • Sharp cat’s eyes, cagey feline eyes,[5] cat-eyed[6]
    • Foxy, angular face, observant green eyes[7]
    • Cat-green eyes[8]
  • Nadine often bribes her way into Eve’s office with large amounts of sweets, such as fudge, doughnuts, and chocolate brownies.
  • Nadine called herself “pretty damn smart” and Eve concurred.[9]

History[]

  • In 2051[10] (during the original killings that were continued in Creation in Death), Nadine said she “was fighting my way out of a second-rate network affiliate in South Philly,” but that her reporting work on those murders enabled her to get a non-Philadelphia job.[9]
  • When she started working at channel 75 in New York City (around 2053[11]), Nadine did on-air pieces but they were “mostly fluff stories, social gigs, celebrity profiles.”[12]
  • By February 2058 and the events of Naked in Death, Nadine was a crime reporter for 75.
  • Nadine got her own crime show, called Now, in December 2059 during Memory in Death.
  • In early 2061 (Apprentice in Death), Nadine moved into a fancy new building, with more space and increased security. Eve complimented her on the “swank digs.”[13]

As Author[]

  • Nadine wrote a book, called Deadly Perfection: The Icove Agenda, about the events of the case. She was anxious that it be completely accurate, and got Dallas’s input on details.[14]
    • The cover was revealed in Fantasy in Death - on a background of icy blue, interlocking faces stared out. The same face over and over - female and striking, with a small, secret smile. They shimmered against the ice, while those eyes seemed to glow with some inner life.[15]
    • Nadine gave Eve a copy of the book, with the dedication: “For Lieutenant Eve Dallas, courageous, relentless, insightful, who honors her badge every day as she stands for the living and the dead.” She told Eve “We’re damn good at what we do... not just because we have the chops, but because it matters. It matters to us, every day.”[15]
    • The book became a bestseller.
    • A “vid” (movie), called The Icove Agenda, was later made.
      • Nadine teasingly asked Eve (but half-seriously) if they could film some of the interviews at Eve’s house, to which she answered emphatically no.
      • During vid production, a series of murders was uncovered (Celebrity in Death).
      • The Icove Agenda was nominated for seven Academy Awards: best actress, best supporting actor, best director, best adapted screenplay, best editing, best sound, and best picture. (Echoes in Death, February 2061)[16]
      • The vid of The Icove Agenda won five Academy Awards: to Nadine Furst for “Best Adapted Screenplay,” and also “Best Director,” “Best Cinematography,” “Best Actress,” and “Best Picture.”[17]
  • Nadine mumbled about turning the events of Celebrity in Death into a book. It could be called Joel Steinburger: Producer in Death.
  • In late 2060 (during Concealed in Death), Nadine told Dallas that she was ready to write a new book. Her working title was Ride the Red Horse, about the case from Delusion in Death.[18] In Obsession in Death, she decided the name of the book should be The Red Horse Legacy (changed from The Red Horse Conspiracy).[4] In Dark in Death, she chose the name The Red Horse Chronicles, and asked Eve to review it.[19] The story was “mass murders brought on by delusions. The virus created by an Urban War cult leader, and brought into the here and now by his ambitious sociopath of a grandson.”[4] In Faithless in Death, Nadine gave Eve a copy of the book, now titled The Red Horse Legacy, ten days ahead of the release date.[20]
