New York West – The apartment complex where Jerald Reinhold rented an 18th floor unit in Thankless in Death with his ill-gotten gains. The complex had been open for six months and was already at 93% capacity. Roarke owned the property, “so you can be assured the security, the staffing, all the amenities are top of the scale.”[1]
The silver-and-glass tower rising above the Hudson River boasted its own bank, a two-level state-of-the-art fitness center - with pool, a five-star spa, a select group of high-end boutiques, 24-hour concierge service, two exclusive restaurants, three bars, and for an additional fee, a daily, weekly, or monthly cleaning service.
The apartment Jerry toured was, “for him, a wet dream” - floor to ceiling windows comprised the river-facing wall, a touch of a button or voice command opened them to the terrace; the living space, furnished with a gel platform sofa, chrome tables, and gold scoop chairs, with its humungo built-in wall screen, floors of cool silver, and walls of pale gold, spilled into a dining area already furnished with a floating, free-form chrome table and glossy black chairs; the kitchen beyond, all hard silver, strong gold, rippled glass, held every modern feature he could imagine, and plenty he hadn’t.
The master suite was furnished with a bed with a glowing black headboard and had privacy screens on that wall of glass sliding up, then down, the glass opening to the terrace. The bathtub had a big, sunken jet tub and a clear glass multi-jet shower, a drying tube, a flash-tan tube, another screen, a small gas fireplace, and an attached dressing room complete with wardrobe comp.
The second bedroom, which the realtor called the perfect home office for a bachelor, also had its own bath - smaller than the master’s but no less swank.
The agent said the previous owner had to leave for Europe before he could fully move in. Jerry rents it on the spot and demands that the agent make arrangements for him to move in the same evening.
The condo center included Bar on M and a Handy Mart on the mezzanine level, both of which Jerry made purchases from.[2]
