Shelby, Officer January “Jan” - Homicide Squad, NYPSD (Cop Central)
First appearance: Festive in Death (December 2060)
History[]
- As of 2060, Officer Shelby worked out of the Five-Two.
- Lieutenant Eve Dallas was impressed with Shelby’s competence at Catiana Dubois’s murder scene in Festive in Death.[1]
- Shelby transferred into Homicide, under Dallas, in January 2061.[2]
- She had barely two years on the job.[4]
Appearance[]
- In Faithless in Death, she had dashed blond through her brown hair, wore it shorter than Eve’s, and it suited her young, pretty face. Not so earnest and green as Trueheart’s had been when Eve brought him into Homicide. Shelby had more edge to her. Peabody called her hairdo a pixie ’do with highlights that Trina gave her with the cop discount of 20% off she started offering after the Ziegler investigation in Festive when the cops stood for her and Sima, although since she was in on it at the end when Copley clocked her, Trina gave her the new ’do on the house.[4]
Family[]
- She had a younger sister[2], an older brother (27 in Faithless), an uncle who won 65 million dollars in the lottery when she was eleven or twelve and had his own restaurant in the Hamptons[4], and a cousin named Laurie[5]
Interesting Facts[]
- Officer Shelby got a black eye on her first day in Homicide.[2]
- Jenkinson said, approvingly, that she handled the fist to her eye “like a cop.”[2]
- Uniform Carmichael added that “she can take a punch.”[2]
- Shelby herself brushed the injury off, saying “My kid sister hits harder, Lieutenant.”[2]
- She was revealed to be a lesbian and former lover of Gwen Huffman in Faithless (when they were teenagers). Her brother, who was a couple of years younger than Trace Huffman, stayed in touch with him - they played guitar together.[4] Her cousin Laurie provided Huffman with her address.[5]
- Was in on The Pleasure Academy raid in Desperation in Death; Eve told her she had good reflexes.[6]
YANNI[]
- Her first name:
- She was introduced in Festive with no first name given. She was next mentioned in Brotherhood in Death, again with no first name given. She transferred to Eve’s squad in Apprentice, no first name given. In Dark in Death, she was referred to as “Mo” by her friend Jill.[7] She was in Leverage in Death and Connections in Death with no first name given.
