Reineke, Detective
First appearance as Anti-Crime Detective: Creation in Death as “Renicki”
First appearance as Homicide Detective: Kindred in Death (c. June 2060, Sunday - Saturday)
Appearance[]
All we know so far about Reineke’s appearance was that he was mixed race, according to Eve in Shadows in Death. She assigned Santiago and Reineke to be stationed in the fields with Roarke’s family because: “Santiago is Latino, Reineke is mixed race, but their skin tone is light enough not to catch the eye right off.”[1]
Interesting Facts[]
- Eve wanted Jenkinson and him on the memorial detail for Deena MacMasters.[2]
- He whistled off-key.[3]
- He ate veggie hash when on a diet.[4]
- He confirmed that if one of Dallas’s detectives made the mistake of telling a superior officer to “fuck you” in her presence, that person’s “ass would be extremely sore from the repeated and forceful application of your boot thereto.”[5]
- In Encore in Death (June 28 - July 1, 2061), Peabody said his great-grandfather died a couple of months ago at age 118, and left some money and a house on the Jersey Shore to him; he was going to try to fix up the house to use as a vacation home and rent it out the rest of the time; his father was handy and he had an uncle who worked in construction, so they would help.[6]
- He sometimes matched his socks to Jenkinson’s ties:
- In Brotherhood in Death, he was wearing red socks shocked with blue lightning bolts to match Jenkinson’s purple and gold. “I gotta keep up with my partner,” Reineke claimed. “Figured I’d go for the footwear, and shoes cost too much to play with.” The best cops she knew, Eve thought as she escaped to her office. Her bullpen was stocked with the best cops she knew. But there were times.[7]
- In Leverage in Death, he was wearing kittens on Zeus socks to go with Jenkinson and his psychotic rainbow tie.[8]
- In Vendetta in Death, when Eve walked back into the bullpen, Jenkinson’s new obscenity of a tie greeted her. When he signaled her over to his desk, she scowled at it. “Why, I ask sincerely, would a grown man, a cop, a veteran detective of the NYPSD wear an atomic-green tie with screaming yellow rubber duckies all over it?” “They’re not screaming, they’re quacking. And it’s what you call whimsy.” “It’s what I call felonious assault on the eyes. Did you get the notes and names from Natalia Zula?” “Yeah, we got ’em—and her daughter was home.” Though he sat and Eve stood, he managed to look down his nose at her. “She said my tie was mag. Just saying. You got the discs on your desk. And check it.” He thumbed back toward Reineke, his usual partner. Obliging, Reineke hitched up his pants leg to reveal screaming yellow rubber duckies on atomic-green socks. “Jesus, you’re coordinating now?” “Just the luck of the draw,” Reineke claimed.[9]
- Later in Vendetta in Death, Eve unlocked her door, stalked out to the bullpen. Jenkinson and his tie were back—and dear God, this one sported rainbows obviously generated in a nuclear reactor. So were Reineke and his socks, but she thanked the patron saint of vision she couldn’t currently see them.[10]
- In Golden in Death, it was unclear if Reineke had colorful socks, because after threatening to “do a drive-by of that stand, buy all the ties, and have them destroyed—it may take a vat of acid—for the public good,” she told Reineke, "Don’t even think about showing me your socks. Don’t even think about it.”[11]
- He had a sister who adopted her hound from a shelter: "Nice dog" (info from Shadows in Death).[12]
- In Random in Death, he was wearing socks with white rabbits peeking out of a magic hat to match Jenkinson’s bloodred tie with magic wands scattered all over, each shooting a different glittery stream of color.[13]
