- He and his wife were proponents of the population adjustment theory; two parents, one offspring.[9]
- When Sharon moved to New York Richard and Elizabeth fought with her over it; Richard pleaded with her and Elizabeth threatened her. Richard went to see her once or twice but that didn’t work.[10]
- Richard and Elizabeth had a two-story rosy brick home set on a sloping hill and flanked by trees. There was an expansive lawn, cherry trees, and the security gate was an artful symphony of curling iron. Visitors took an electric cart from the gate to the house, and, “where Roarke’s home had simply whispered money, this one said old money.”[11]
- He was overshadowed by his father and often at odds with him; their relationship was combative and frustrated.[12] Richard later described him as a tyrant, and difficult. When he learned of the rapes, he said they made his father a monster.[13]
- Richard was a moderate’s moderate. He maintained a low profile and supported his causes quietly.[4]
- Richard was aware of Roarke’s past in smuggling; they’d been friends for years.[14] Richard believed that guns were a dangerous symbol of power and abuse.[15]
- Roarke took an interest in Kevin in Vengeance in Death and helped him get adopted by Richard and Elizabeth by making a “contribution” to the CPS.[1]
