Roarke's Gifts to Eve[]

Real Coffee[]

It is suggested in Naked,[1] that in the middle part of the 21st Century, the depletion of the Rain Forests are responsible for coffee no longer being in abundant supply. Vegetable concentrates are usually used instead. Therefore "real" coffee is expensive and hard to come by. Eve, as we find out in that same scene referenced above, has a weakness for Roarke's brand of "real" coffee. Therefore, it was the perfect gift for her.

The scene in which this first bag of coffee arrived was in Naked when Eve was hanging out at her apartment with Mavis. The gift came wrapped in gold foil with an elaborate bow. While Eve contemplates how Roarke could have known where she lived and what he was up to, Mavis pleads for her to open the package:[2]

Naked in Death, Pg. 53 (Hardcover):

"I bet it's diamonds," Mavis said, pouncing on the box as her patience snapped. "A necklace. A diamond necklace. Maybe rubies. You'd look sensational in rubies."

Mavis ripped ruthlessly through the pricey paper, tossed aside the lid of the box, and plunged her hand through the gold-edged tissue. "What the hell is this?"

But Eve had already scented it, already -- despite herself -- begun to smile. "It's coffee," she murmured, unaware of the way her voice softened as she reached for the simple brown bag Mavis held.

"Coffee." Illusions shattered, Mavis stared. "The man's got more money than God, and he sends you a bag of coffee?"

"Real Coffee."

"Oh, well then." In disgust, Mavis waved a hand. "I don't care what the damned stuff costs a pound, Dallas. A woman wants glitter."

Eve brought the bag to her face and sniffed deep. "Not this woman. The son of a bitch knew just how to get to me." She sighed. "In more ways than one."

At the end of Naked in Death, Roarke brought her a second pound of coffee.[3]

The Giant's Tear[]

The Giant's Tear[4] is the first piece of jewelry that Roarke buys for Eve and is worn around her neck through the rest of the series. Purchased in Sydney, Australia while Roarke is there on business and presented to Eve in a slim gold box.

Glory in Death, Pg. 63:

"It was a diamond. She knew enough to be sure of that. The stone graced a twisted gold chain and glinted fire. Shaped like a tear, it was as long and wide as the first joint of a man's thumb."

This gift confuses Eve and leads to the first quarrel between her and Roarke. However, Eve takes to playing with it when thinking and leaves it outside her shirt just before talking with Larinda Mars at Channel 75.

Bath Salts[]

One of the first incidental gifts mentioned in the series is a supply of foaming bath salts that Roarke picked up from Paris. She indicates that they smell of her honeymoon, "rich and romantic".[5]
