Simone – The name of the boat Violet Holmes owned in Celebrity in Death; it was named for her signature role, which launched her career thirty years ago. She moored it at the Land Edge Marina at Battery Park. Joel Steinburger, who had the codes to the marina and boat, “borrowed” the boat to ditch the electronics he had taken from A.A. Asner after murdering him, but didn’t know about the new digi-log that Holmes’s cohab, Phillip Decater, had bought her the previous month. As a result, Eve and Peabody were able to find the location of the dump site and recover the items.
The pretty white boat with shining brass and gleaming wood was ten years old and she was moored in slip six, Holmes’s lucky number. The wood was reclaimed teak, and she and Decater did a lot of entertaining on her in the summer; she slept eight. She climbed up a narrow flight of stairs, entered another code at a glass-fronted door to get to the command center/helm. There was an old-fashioned ship’s wheel and a view out the wide ribbon of glass of the harbor. Holmes had sonar (“fun for tracking schools of fish, or whales if we take her out far enough”), various global weather stations, and the voice-activated digi-log.
Holmes and Decater hosted a harbor party at the end of August for the cast and crew of The Icove Agenda, and they did another overnight for a smaller group - Connie Burkette, Mason Roundtree, Steinburger, and Andrea Smythe, all of whom had boats. Holmes and Connie had lunch on the deck one afternoon the previous month, and she lent it to Joel a few weeks ago so he could take some of the money people out.[1]
