Sloan, Myers, and Kraus – Mentioned in Born in Death, it was a reputable accounting firm with offices on Hudson, employing about two hundred people and in existence for over forty years; it was a big-deal firm with high-dollar clients and several corporations.[1]

Jacob Sloan founded the firm with Carl Myers (senior) and Sloan took a very active role in the running of the firm. Carl Myers (junior) handled more domestic, corporate, and top individual accounts. Robert Kraus made partner about ten years ago and headed up the legal department, overseeing some of the top foreign and international accounts. All were very active and very hands on.[2]

In keeping with their service of high-end clients, the reception area was plush, glass-walled, and full of green, leafy plants. The wide stone-gray counter served as a work area for three receptionists, all of whom wore headsets and worked busily on keyboards. A trio of waiting areas fanned out like sunbeams, boasting deep chairs, media screens, and a selection of entertainment discs.[3]

The power center of the firm was on the sixty-fifth floor. A wall of glass with a pale gold sheen let in the city with a gilded light that made statements of industry and wealth. Plush carpeting of deep red was bordered with dark, thick wood. There was no reception area here, no waiting alcove. Eve imagined any client worthy of this floor would never be expected to check in or cool heels. There was a seating area of lush sofas and thick tables, arranged for informal or personal chats, and a small, stylish bar.[3]
