The Red Horse LegacyNadine Furst’s second bestselling book, based on the events of the case from Delusion in Death and soon to be adapted into a vid. It was first mentioned in late 2060 (during Concealed in Death), when Nadine told Dallas that she was ready to write a new book. Her working title was Ride the Red Horse.[1] In Obsession in Death, she decided the name of the book should be The Red Horse Legacy (changed from The Red Horse Conspiracy).[2] In Dark in Death, she chose the name The Red Horse Chronicles, and asked Eve to review it.[3] The story was “mass murders brought on by delusions. The virus created by an Urban War cult leader, and brought into the here and now by his ambitious sociopath of a grandson.”[2]

In Faithless in Death, Nadine gave Eve a copy of the book, now titled The Red Horse Legacy, ten days ahead of the release date, saying, “Hot off the press. It’s not out for another ten days, but you get the first copy. Who knows how many more they'd have killed if you hadn't rooted them out?” Eve grunted and told her, “Your name’s bigger on this one than on The Icove Agenda.” Nadine told her the next book would be based on Wilkey and his sick order.[4]

Whitney asked Eve if she vetted the book, and she replied, “It’s accurate. Maybe dramatic in parts, but accurate.” Whitney was presumably reading from the jacket: “Infecting people with an airborne virus that causes hallucinations, making them murderous or suicidal qualifies as dramatic, I’d say.” Peabody said the book looked mag, and Nadine signed Eve’s copy: “Dallas, My partner in crime. Nadine.” It was dedicated to all of the cops in their division and Roarke, and Whitney, and everybody who was on that investigation. “For their valor.”[5]

In Encore in Death, Lin Jacoby told Eve Brant Fitzhugh “went to bat for Julian Cross with the producer, the director putting the Red Horse sequel together. If Julian stayed clean and clear, he would play Roarke again in the sequel.[6]

People who have said they read the book included:

  • Bolton Kincade Singer, who read Deadly Perfection: The Icove Agenda and saw the vid (The Icove Agenda), had started it in Forgotten in Death[7]
  • Harmony Singer, who loved the first book and the vid, was halfway through The Red Horse Legacy in Forgotten in Death and thought it might top it - “it’s got me by the throat”[8]
  • Miranda, Garnet DeWinter’s daughter, in Forgotten in Death, who told Eve she’d like to talk to her about the Red Horse investigation when she finished the book. “A lot of people think, and say, there isn’t real evil in the world. But there is. I have to decide if I want to work on the science end or the investigative end of stopping evil, and the misguided, and the ones that fall into other areas.”[9]
  • Mira’s temp admin told Eve she was reading it in Forgotten in Death and it was amazing. She was still on Long Island when it happened, but she heard all about it.[10]
  • Yuri Bardov had just started it in Forgotten in Death, and was thankful that he and his wife and some of their family had been in Europe while the actual events were happening in New York[11]
  • Marta Bardova in Forgotten in Death, who asked Peabody if McNab was her love because he was “in the book and now in the new book”; she wished them many happy years together, saying he was adorable in the books[12]
  • When Jamie Lingstrom met Nadine in Abandoned in Death, he gushed, “Really like your books. The vid topped it out.”[13]
  • Carlie Greenleaf in Payback in Death read both books and saw “the first vid” (there was only one)[14]
  • Darlie Tanaka had enjoyed both of Nadine’s books, and was glad Eve and Peabody were the ones looking for Martin Greenleaf’s murderer in Payback in Death[15]
  • Lynn, Cela Spaceck’s receptionist in Payback in Death, read both books and was a huge fan of Peabody’s smart mouth; she saw the vid and was excited that Nadine was writing a third book[16]
  • Professor Elaine Gleason in Payback in Death, who followed Eve’s cases closely, since she taught a criminal justice class at NYU, and covered the first book in the student book club she ran - Crime and Punishment, and planned to cover this one as the first read in the fall semester[17]
  • Moses Rowe in Random in Death saw the vid and read both books[18]
  • Donna Fleschner in Passions in Death, who told Eve and Peabody “After I saw the vid, I downloaded the first book -- already read the second -- can’t wait for the vid.”[19]
