Tunnel of Terror – An interior thrill ride with lots of screaming at the Coney Island Amusement Center, mentioned in Random in Death as one of the possible rides Francis Bryce would try to take his victim to rape and kill her. It was ages twelve and up without an adult. Roarke described it as “haunted, overrun with vampires, zombies, name your monster. The tracks circle and snake, climb up, then drop down abruptly into the dark. Various horror vid sound effects, perhaps the brush of skeletal fingers over your face, the red eyes of a giant spider hurtling toward you in a sudden flash of light.” Eve asked, “Who thinks of stuff like that?” and Roarke admitted he had a bit to do with the design. “If you’re paying for terror, the tunnel ought to provide it.”
Bryce took Delaney Brooke on this ride, which was eight minutes long, intending to rape her on the small platform behind a wall of fake bones and severed heads (the wall of doom) that they encountered after two minutes. There was an emergency exit behind the platform, and he planned to escape through that after he killed Del. Eve and Roarke had the ride stopped, so although Bryce tore Del’s shirt, he didn’t have time to rape her.[1]
