Vending Machines – Vending machines sell food and drink by automation. They are found in many buildings including businesses, schools, and NYPSD facilities.
Payment is made by inserting cash or credits or by keying in an authorization code.

- Cranberry Muffin[7]
- Danishes:
- Blueberry - Eve said it was laughingly billed as a blueberry Danish, called it an anemic-looking excuse for a breakfast pastry, and when the vending machine refused to dispense it, Baxter intervened, and the machine cheerfully listed its mega-syllabic ingredients and dubious nutritional value.[8]
- Cheese[9]

- Simulated egg pocket - Peabody had one and said “it was worse than it sounds. A lot worse.”[23]
- Soy chips[24]
- Vegalicious Pocket - Peabody called it Vegaterrible, but said it fills the hole; Eve took a bite, dumped the rest in the recycler “where it belonged” and settled for a power bar since the candy thief had stolen her chocolate.[25]
- Yogurt bar - Peabody was going to settle for a yogurt bar and egg pocket from a cart or Vending, but she and Eve were at Jacko’s to interview the staff in Echoes in Death[26]

Security[]
Vending machines were equipped with ScanEye and would use this tool to record anyone who attempted to vandalize, deface, or damage the units. (Eve Dallas was in the middle of a “cold war”[53] with vending).[54]
- After Eve thumped one of the vending machines, she received this warning: “You are in violation of City Code 20613-A. Any tampering with, any vandalism of this vending unit can result in fine and/or imprisonment.”[27] (See also Vending Machine Crisis)
- Another warning: “Warning! Warning! Vandalizing or damaging this unit is a crime, and punishable by a maximum of thirty days incarceration and a fine not to exceed one thousand dollars per offense. Warning! Warning!”[55]
- Two violations of inappropriate language and one threat of vandalism were added to Detective Clint Harcove’s file in Dark in Death. (Details here)
Eve’s Suspicions[]
- When Roarke was going to put more money into a machine that “stole” Eve’s, she said, “You know it’s just going to keep stealing if people like you pander to it.” When Roarke told her it was a machine and did not think, Eve said, “Ever hear of artificial intelligence, ace?”[22]
- When Peabody told Eve the machines don’t live or think, Eve said, “They want you to believe that. They talk to each other through their little chips and boards, and are probably plotting to destroy all humankind. One day, it’ll be them or us.”[56]
